“I once said: ‘There is no such thing as an infant’, meaning, of course, that whenever one finds an infant one finds maternal care, and without maternal care there would be no infant.”

Per·i·na·tal /ˌperəˈnādl/

Pertaining to the period immediately before and after birth. The perinatal period is defined in diverse ways. There is great variability in its definition. Some sources have the earliest beginning at conception, and the ones who attribute the longer duration have it ending 1 year after birth. I would suggest the most helpful way to think about it is to consider the period of time that encompasses having a baby: from conception to one year after birth. And would add that we can think of conception as the physical event when an egg is fertilized by a sperm, but if we go further a baby is conceived in the parents’ mind long before this physical event happens.

A mother is born when a baby is born

The psychological conception of a baby, includes planning and trying for a baby, for it is during that time that a baby begins to take shape in the parent’s mind. During this time and all through pregnancy and postpartum, the parent’s mind becomes a workspace where the future baby is imagined along with all the hopes, dreams and fears that accompany having a baby.
